# Down payment help: federal and state home buyer programs

> Federal and state programs that help with a down payment, by state, with official links. Most must be set up through a participating lender before closing. City and county programs are not included yet.

By David Knorr, founder of BuyWise Home. Last reviewed October 28, 2026. Web page: https://www.buywisehome.com/guide/tools/down-payment-help

## How it works

Pick the state and county, enter the price and your household, and the finder sorts programs into likely fits, worth checking, and not this time, with the reason for each. Income stays in the browser.

City and county programs are not included yet: ask your lender and your city or county housing office.
