Homestead exemption

In plain English

A reduction in the taxable value of the home you live in, which lowers your property tax. In Georgia, if you own and live in the home on January 1, apply to your county by April 1.

Why it matters to you

It isn't automatic: if you don't apply, you pay more every year. Some counties offer extra exemptions too, so ask your county tax office what you qualify for.
