Home inspection

In plain English

A visual check of the home's condition by a professional inspector: roof, structure, water, electrical, plumbing, and heating and cooling. It often costs about $300 to $600, depending on the size and age of the home.

Why it matters to you

The findings are the basis of your negotiation. A standard inspection doesn't include a radon test or a sewer scope, and the inspector can't see inside walls. Go to it, and read the whole report, not just the summary. See an inspection read for you on a real home.
